Day 31: Little Rock, Arkansas

Drove from New Orleans to Little Rock, Arkansas today. A long drive, but nothing else planned. Had a nice breakfast and relaxed a bit before heading out on the road to the Tesla supercharger close by. I realized there that I had brought the room key along with me by mistake. Returned back to the AirBnb to return the key since it was not far away. I think this is the first mess up on checkout so far in this trip.

The first 50 miles or so driving out of New Orleans is mostly on an elevated road or bridge through marsh land or water.  Got me thinking about hurricane Katrina and worried about future hurricanes, climate change, increase in sea levels. Hope the city stays safe!

There are not too many Tesla superchargers on the way to Little Rock, so had to charge for a longer time to get closer to 100%.  One of the superchargers was at the Ameristar Casino, right on banks of the Mississippi river. The only coffee available was the self serve one, if you were gambling on the slot machines :-)

This was another day where the Tesla navigation routed me on a gravel road, though it was only for a mile or so.  I also drove past many cotton fields, the first time I noticed them in this road trip. Also the first time I saw crop burning in the US. I guess they burn the cotton plants after harvesting the cotton out.

After several stops along the way for charging, food or just to rest, I reached my AirBnb in Little Rock. It was a Victorian house from 1905, beautifully restored into two 1-bedroom units. The neighborhood was patchy, many nice houses and many boarded up or rundown houses.

When I got off the freeway onto the city streets in Little Rock, I noticed a creaking sound coming from the front passenger side of the Tesla. It was mostly at low speeds on uneven roads. This got me worried and I searched for the closest Tesla service center to have them look into it. The closest one was over a 100 miles away. I made an appointment at the Tulsa service center, which was on my way and not a big detour.

The raw numbers for the day:

  • 437 miles driving, 4500 steps walking
  • 3 Tesla supercharger stops, 110V trickle charging overnight
  • 3 states - Louisiana, Mississippi, Arkansas

Day 5: KOA Cabin in Glacier National Park

A long drive today from Spokane to the West Glacier KOA Resort, which is close to the Glacier National Park entrance. I had to slow down or stop many times during the drive due to road construction underway at multiple places. There was also a traffic jam to deal with at one place. Lastly, I had go past the most direct route for about 15 miles to get to a supercharger in Superior, MT and then retrace back.  I reached my destination for the day, a cute looking KOA log cabin in a beautiful KOA resort surrounded by mountains. The cabin has electricity, heater, refrigerator and a microwave. Not too shabby, changed my perception of what a KOA kampground is like.  The nearest supercharger from Glacier National Park is over 120 miles away. The primary reason I chose to book at KOA is because they provide access to a NEMA 14-50 220V charger. A timeslot for the single outlet they have needs to be  reserved ahead of time. I was very relieved when all of this worked and my...

Kashmir Great Lakes Trek, 2024

Kashmir Great Lakes Trek (KGL) has been on my bucket list for many years. It is known as the most beautiful trek in India, definitely one of the most popular. After lots of research and prep work, finally did the trek from July 29 - August 4 this year, along with four of my hiking buddies from the Bay Area. It was a dream come true - spectacular hiking with wonderful friends! The trailhead for the KGL trek is near Sonmarg. We carried only small daypacks during the 7-day trek. All supplies and luggage are carried by mules/horses. We had a support staff of 6 (guides, cook, etc.) for our private group of 5 hikers. Under overcast skies and the fog rolling in, we hiked past these shepherd huts at 9000 ft. These huts are used only in the summer months by the Kashmiri Gujjars (gypsies). A few hours into the hiking on the first day, we had a heavy downpour and the raingear came out. The locals were happy to see the first decent rainfall after a dry spell of 2 months. An auspicious start to our...
